ACT 2.3 — The Web We Weave 📖

“With the footballers, he sees threads he can weave into the tapestry in his head. But this puts him squarely at odds with the soon-to-be-retiring captain, a leader for the team, and a protector at all costs.”

WHAT’S THE END GOAL OF THIS PLOT POINT?

We remind ourselves that Jireh is a storytelling craftsman. However, this is both a gift and curse, especially the way Jireh goes about it.

The stories he creates are creating problems for others, but Jireh is completely indifferent to all that noise.

By the end of this plot point, Jireh goes from someone just doing their job, to someone who finds themselves as an outcast.

WHAT POSSIBLE SCENES COME OUT OF THIS?

I can see a scene that’s like a “team building” dinner. After a few drinks, he’s goaded into singing on stage. He tries to sing, gets embarrassed, and chickens out.

Jireh’s bruised ego comes across like arrogance, to footballers who’ve been put down all their lives.

He feeds back to the producer and other big wigs in a meeting, about some of the salacious stories he could add to the documentary to ensure it’s an easy sell. The captain decides to attend this meeting and, without saying a word, makes it clear he opposes Jireh.

The captain confronts him later, explaining how he is driving the team apart, and why that can’t continue.

WHAT FACTUAL/CONCEPTUAL ELEMENTS CAN BOLSTER THIS PLOT POINT?

It’s what businesses try to do. Find a niche. Find a space where your skills are needed. Find needs that are not being met. Bring this altogether, and you’ve got a unicorn of a business.

Jireh is struggling with this. He has the skill of creating stories, and is probably going to create a documentary that the producer will be happy with. But the footballers and the benefactors are not convinced.

ANY POETIC ELEMENTS TO FIT IN HERE?

We already have the image of threads that Jireh is pulling and weaving. I can then extend this imagery and show how Jireh pulls so hard from these threads from others. And as he pulls, the threads start to fray.

He finds himself like a needle, lost in the haystack. Or a ball of yarn. And he can’t find his way out.

Like pulling on a lost bit of thread on your favourite jumper, there are times when you just need to stop just pulling.

I’m a soon-to-be author… Writing (a book) in Public — “Purpose: Antidote to Happiness”.

You can follow my journey on:

I’m writing this book to explore the tension between happiness and purpose. Between surface and depth. Desires and needs.

Through the eyes of Jireh, a writer who find the narrative in everything. Conflict and all.
